For our podcast, Manus, Callum, and I chose Cas Holmen. She is undoubtedly one of my favourite designers. Her work is fun yet considered, challenging the standards of play. Every one of her designs sparks a different conversation, which gave us plenty to consider as we researched our podcast.
We each watched her on Netflix, Abstract: The Art of Design. This episode was how I originally discovered Cas Holmen over a year ago, but rewatching it reminded me of why I loved her work in the first place. The episode showed us both her work and her life experiences, and how they inform her designs.
She delivers lectures around the world, and I found a lot of them on YouTube. I found that, even when some videos were on the same topic, she managed to raise new and fascinating points each time.
We decided to structure our podcast around her work, using her products as starting points to discuss her philosophies. The scripts we had begun with a product description to give a listener an idea of the form we were discussing. We then had a less structured discussion to ensure we spoke as freely as possible. We wanted our podcast to sound like a real discussion, not just a script.
At the beginning of the recording, I could barely speak. The idea of every word, pause, and noise being recorded as I spoke made it impossible to get the words out. We ended up doing a few practice runs, which warmed me up to record the real thing.
Once the uncertainty had faded, I began to really enjoy being in the recording room with Manus and Callum. It was nice to have a structured conversation about a specific topic, while still being able to express your opinions and hear others’ views. We all agreed we would like to go back to the audio labs in the library, and we just need to find another reason to do so.
